This was an amazing card with 8 of the 9 matches ending with a submission. The whole event was worth watching top to bottom(skip to the fights; commentary is still brutal) so if you missed it, go and watch the whole thing. If you don’t have time or already saw it, here is the recap and some highlights.
Ana Lima won the first match with a 1st round armbar. This match was leg lock heavy before the short armlock came out of nowhere. Mourece Ramirez won a decision over Victor Delibero, and it was looking like any other UFC BJJ so far with some action and some lulls.
Then John “White Chocolate” Chandler lit the fuse in the third match of the night choking Rafa Ferreira unconscious with 2 seconds left in the 3rd round. Rafa tapped then took a quick nap. Rafa put on a good performance, handily winning the first two rounds. John admitted to eating a few pops in his leg during a calf slicer, but “White Chocolate” refused to quit and delivered an incredible comeback. I look forward to seeing both competitors again.
From then on, it was all action. Achilles Rocha and Bella Mir made Vagner Rocha and Frank Mir a couple of proud fathers as they both finished their opponents and moved closer to a title shot.
Then the top contenders returned to form. Ffion Davies found herself caught in a triangle almost immediately. She hung tough and fought off the submission before finding the armbar finish before the end of the 1st round. Nicky Rod looked slow and heavy during his last match. Not this time, as he was shot out of a cannon at the start of the match, skipping the slap bump and hitting an immediate double leg takedown. Not long after he got to the back and put on the squeeze, finishing a 1st round RNC.
John Chandler is the newcomer that won us over tonight. Gilbert “Durinho” Burns is the legend that showed us he still has what it takes, and he made it look easy. He got a first round finish by rear naked choke, and then called out a ton of legends. He said he wanted a title shot, but if not, he called out Dustin Poirier, Nate Diaz, Demian Maia, and Anthony Pettis. No matter who he grapples next, I’m excited to have Durinho back in BJJ.
In the main event, Mason Fowler mangled Devhonte Johnson. After both getting stalling calls from referee Shaolin Ribeiro, Mason hit an armdrag onto the back and finished easily while smiling and talking. It simply looked too easy for Mason. His next match won’t be so easy as both Achilles Rocha and Nicky Rod called out Mason asking for title shots. Mason also mentioned Hulk Barbosa as a potential opponent so we will have to wait and see.
Coming up next at UFC BJJ 10
It’s looking like 3 title matches and the return of Adele Fornarino, arguably the number 1 female grappler in the world. Unfortunately, we will have to wait until August 20th for the next UFC BJJ but it definitely looks to be worth the wait!
